Long Island City Shared Streets
Long Island City, Queens, NY
Long Island City Shared Streets envisions transforming the fragmented public realm of Long Island City into a cohesive, pedestrian-first environment that strengthens connectivity, safety, and community identity. The design seeks to link the area’s dispersed public plazas into a continuous pedestrian corridor, creating a seamless urban experience that encourages walking and social interaction.
Improving access between Queensboro Plaza and Court Square is a central priority, with interventions aimed at making the journey safer and more intuitive for pedestrians. To further enhance walkability, secondary and tertiary roads around Court Square will be calmed through the introduction of a “shared streets” model.
The plan also expands public and green space throughout the neighborhood, providing much-needed relief in an area characterized by rapid development. These new and reimagined open spaces will be infused with a strong sense of place by collaborating with local artists, drawing inspiration from the legacy of Five Points to celebrate the neighborhood’s creative legacy.
Ultimately, the project aspires to create a network of inviting, human-centered public spaces that foster connection, cultural expression, and community pride in the heart of Long Island City.
