By designating parking spaces adjacent to public arcades as Mobile Use Zones, the spatial character of Water Street is maintained and large portions of roadbed are reclaimed for public and commercial use. Small interventions are installed to facilitate programmatic relationships between mobile uses and arcades. These uses can include, food trucks, mobile DJs, bar trucks, street vendors, mobile clinics and children’s daycare.
Minimal capital investment is required for the Mobile Use Corridor. The permanent changes to the street are simple traffic calming and other pedestrian infrastructure improvements. The mobile nature of the Water Street Mobile Use Corridor makes it resilient to storm surge.
